Hokies make strong impression on visitor
Virginia Tech played host to one recruit this past weekend. The out-of-state defensive end enjoyed his visit to Blacksburg, but where do the Hokies stand now for the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder?
"It was awesome," Brecksville (Ohio) Brecksville Broadview Heights defensive end Mike Tyler said. "I went to Virginia Tech on Saturday and just visited with Coach Brown.
"He just took me around the athletic facilities. I also met with the tight end and offensive coordinator, Coach Stinespring. We talked a little bit about where they see me and how there are limited spots. He mentioned they want me to come back up there for camp."
Did Tech discuss his position further?
"Well, actually that's a question," he said. "The offensive coordinator liked me at tight end and then Coach Brown likes me at defensive end. They are pretty packed at both positions though and it's a question of whether or not they have the room."
Tyler isn't sure when he'll make it back up, but plans to make the return visit.
"I'm not sure which date I'm going as there are two camps in June or July, I'm going to one of the two," he stated. "They told me they want me back for a one day camp. They liked my film and they just want to see how I put on weight and how I play against competitors they know for a fact."
Still, Tyler's visit impressed.
"It was my first time and I absolutely loved it," he said. "I've got good grades and I liked the balance they have between football, social and academics, it's all there. I love the football field and the facilities. Everything was amazing and it's a hell of an engineering and architecture school, that's what I want to major in. I loved it."
Regarding his time with the coaches. Tyler liked Brown and Stinespring.
"I talked to Coach Brown the most and I really like Coach Brown," he said. "He's realistic and not trying to BS me. He saw my film and saw the work ethic and he understood just what kind of player I am.
"I talked to Coach Stinespring in his office and he's realistic too and a funny guy. He was telling stories about his son and I like the personalities. I liked both of them a lot."
Tech certainly made an impression, but where do they stand now?
"It's a lot of motivation for me to work harder and go up there," he said. "It's one of my goals in the future, I'd really like to go back up for camp and see if I can fit for one of their spots."
Tyler noted he plans to take this weekend off, but plans to head to either Duke or Northwestern on the weekend of March 10th.
Tyler earned all-conference honors after posting 69 tackles and 11 sacks as a junior last season.
