Cedar Hill, Denton Guyer meet in season opener

Cedar Hill, Denton Guyer Meet again

Cedar Hill will face Denton Guyer tonight at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton and Cedar Hill Head Football Coach Joey McGuire previews the game.

AY: Coach what is key in tonight's game?

Coach McGuire: On defense we will need to slow up the quarterback, (Jerrod) Hurd. He is a junior committed to Texas and is a dual-threat quarterback. He can do great things with his feet. We will really have to slow and break down his playing ability. On offense our main focus is to protect the ball. We had three turnovers within the 30 during our scrimmage.

AY: Can you talk about how you will use the two A&M commits, Quincy Adeboyejo and Laquvionte Gonzalez?

Coach McGuire: Both Qunicy and Quiv are great, outstanding athletes with character. They know how to put the recruiting process behind them and focus on the game. They are fired up to be Aggies but know they still have a job to do.

With Quincy he opened up scoring for us during the scrimmage and we will look to him tonight in fade routes to open up and lengthen the field. With his speed we want him to stretch the field and his good vision will be used in the screen game.

Quiv, you will see him everywhere tonight; punt-return, kick-return, wide receiver, running back, punter, prevention defense and on into the season at corner.

AY: A match up that has come down to the wire in the past couple of matchups, how tough is it opening up the season with Guyer?

Coach Joey McGuire: Our record against Guyer is 2-1. We won two years ago in the regular season, then they knocked us out of playoffs that year and then we had another victory in the regular season. (2010: Cedar Hill beat Guyer, 42-41, in overtime and in playoffs Guyer turned around and beat Cedar Hill, 48-35. In 2011, Cedar Hill beat Guyer, 24-21)

They are a lot like us. They have some weapons on offense; at wide receiver they have (Ellis) Jefferson who is committed to Arizona State and the left tackle (Patrick Morris) is committed to TCU. It will be a bend but don't break game. It will be tough to shut them down.

AY: New players stepping up for Guyer on defense, what are seeing from them?

Coach Joey McGuire: On defense they are like us, young. Offense will dictate this game. We will have to use experience to take shots down field in scoring.

Ay: What's the goal for this year?

Coach Joey McGuire: Our goal this year is what we call DPS; win district, practice on Thanksgiving and state champions. We need the offense to lead and each game for the defense to mature.
