Marcus Lee impressed by family atmosphere at Madness
The family of five-star California power forward Marcus Lee is a very close-knit group. That's why it is a little bit difficult at times for Lee to envision himself playing at Rupp, an arena that is over 2,350 miles from his home. But, after an official visit to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness, Lee is considering making the Wildcats his second family.
Monday morning, Cats Illustrated caught up with Lee's older brother Bryan, the longtime family recruiting spokesman, who said that the visit to Kentucky was made all the more special because Marcus got to experience the trip with four 2013 UK commitments.
"To have a visit at the same time with the Harrison twins and James Young was just perfect timing. The cool thing to me was to see the families and how everyone comes from different places." Lee said.
With all of those people it's apparent that everyone comes from a great support system and that you're dealing with really good kids."
The role of family and support will be a critical part in deciding where Lee, who is down to just Kentucky and California, ultimately decides to spend his college years. A staple of the large family atmosphere is a strong patriarch; and that is how the Lee clan is beginning to view Kentucky coach John Calipari.
"Marcus has grown really close with coach Calipari this fall with all of the time he's spent with him," said Lee, "What Marcus likes about coach Calipari is that he speaks to the guys in a simple way of putting things with the recruitment. Marcus is looking mostly for a coach that will push him hard to that next level and who knows exactly what it takes to get there. There's no doubt that Calipari is a great motivator."
Overall, the entire feel of the atmosphere at Big Blue Madness did a lot to sway Lee towards Kentucky.
"The visit went really well. Marcus enjoyed the environment a lot. Big Blue Madness was crazy, which is basically what we had expected. Academically he was impressed; he really liked all of the support staff around the program, the whole experience felt like a family environment to Marcus."
Now that they've made their big trip out to Lexington, the Lee family is slowly beginning to wind down the recruiting process and move towards decision day.
"We're going to take an official to California this week," Lee said, "There's nothing new that we want to see at California, we just thought it would be best to take one last look somewhere before jumping to a snap decision right after returning from Lexington.
"After that California visit we're going to really focus in on making a decision. If not next week then most likely the week after Marcus will have a decision made."
In the end, Marcus Lee is approaching this decision like it is the biggest one that he has made so far in his life; and to be honest it probably is.
"Marcus wants to be really tedious with his decision and look at pro's and con's. He doesn't want to just make a decision off of the excitement of a visit. He goes back and forth, right now it's tough for him."
