Porter In The Fourth Round To Bengals
AggieYell.com continues its player by player breakdown of members of the 2012 Texas A&M football team who could be selected in the 2013 NFL Draft with LB Sean Porter.
Size: 6 feet, 2 inches tall; 230 pounds
Resume: 66 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery in 2012; 2011 All-Big 12 selection, pre-season All-SEC selection in 2012. Contributed 261 tackles, 34.5 TFL and 14.5 sacks in his four-year career. Started the last 39 games of his career without missing a game due to injury.
Supporters say: Porter is an extremely intelligent, versatile linebacker who excelled in multiple roles in multiple systems. Proved in 2010 that he can defend the pass (6 pass breakups); showed in 2011 that he can rush the passer in a 3-4 set. Showed he is a top-level outside linebacker in a 4-3 system in 2012. Tremendous leader on and off the field; great intensity and gives non-stop effort.
Critics say: Wasn't the playmaker in 2012 that he was in 2011; doesn't have great size or top-end speed. Can get caught up in the wash if he's slightly out of position.
Bottom line: Porter did everything that was asked of him during his career at A&M and has proven his versatility. He can fit with either a 3-4 or a 4-3 team and is a three-down linebacker. He's durable, will do whatever's asked of him without complaint and plays with a controlled fury. He's also an asset on special teams. His stock may not be as high as it was after 2011, but some team is going to get an immediate contributor who will eventually be a long-time starter.
Draft prediction: 3rd or 4th round.
