June 20, 2013As Texas A&M's fall camp draws closer, AggieYell.com will introduce each of the players who are arriving in College Station this summer. Next up: safety Jonathan Wiggins.
Height/Weight: 6'3", 210 lbs.
High School: Alief Taylor
2012 statistics: 111 tackles, 7 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 9 pass breakups, 6 tackles for loss
Awards/Recognitions: 5A All-State Honorable Mention; 18-5A First Team All-District
Why the Aggies wanted him: When Wiggins committed on Feb. 19, 2012 -- one of two players to commit that day -- the Aggies knew they would be without Steven Terrell and Steven Campbell in 2013 and had no idea what they would be getting out of Howard Matthews. A&M was on the lookout for big, athletic safeties who would be able to hold up against the run in the SEC first and foremost, then also defend the pass adequately.
In Wiggins, A&M got what it was looking for: a safety fast enough to run track, but big and strong enough to take on running backs and take them down without help.
Likelihood of playing in 2013 (5 being probable starter, 1 being near-certain redshirt): 3. He'll have work to do to break into the two-deep behind Matthews, but with his size and speed, he could be an immediate contributor on special teams. A season in A&M's strength and conditioning program could make Wiggins into an impressively-sized SEC safety.
