July 10, 2013As Texas A&M's fall camp draws closer, AggieYell.com will introduce each of the players who are arriving in College Station this summer. Next up: cornerback Tavares Garner.
High School: Manvel
Height/Weight: 6 feet, 175 lbs.
2012 Statistics: 35 tackles, 5 INTs, 1 FR, 9 PBUs
Awards/Recognitions: Rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com; 22-5A First Team All-District; Offense-Defense All-American; 5A Second Team All-State (AP); 5A All-Region III Second Team
Why the Aggies wanted him: The Aggies were looking for depth at cornerback for 2013, as they knew Dustin Harris would be gone and had no real idea what to expect from incoming freshman Devante Harris and JUCO transfer Otis Jacobs. In one day -- June 14, 2012 -- A&M picked up two corners who could be their future starters: Noel Ellis and Garner, who had been committed to Texas Tech previously. With Ellis, they found a corner more in the Devante Harris mold: smaller, but an outstanding pass defender. In Garner, the Aggies picked up a player whose style more closely matches Deshazor Everett's -- he's bigger, a little stronger and more physical with receivers.
By the end of the 2012 season, opponents had not only stopped throwing Garner's way, but had largely stopped running his way as well. He's aggressive, doesn't mind contact and has good top end speed, allowing him to keep up with opposing wideouts.
Likelihood of playing in 2013 (5 being probable starter, 1 being near-certain redshirt): 4. The Aggies are likely going to need two incoming freshmen to play corner this fall in a reserve role. Ellis and Garner are likely the most prepared to do so.
