We had a post game Q&A between AggieYell publisher Jeff Tarpley and some of our subscribers. Here are the highlights of a session that ran into the wee hours of the morning with most of the questions focusing on the defensive performance in A&M's 49-42 loss to Alabama.
Q: Originally posted by 12thman_2016 How much of defenses problems are fixable through coaching?
A: Other than getting the right people on the field, very few...but that's a lot of coaching to begin with anyway.
Q: Originally posted by Dope Rhyme .How much better can the defense get by LSU? That's what will determine whether or not we get to a BCS game or not in my opinion. Even if the defense doesn't get better, we still win every other game.
A: Even if it was a TD better today (the defense), it (the game) goes to OT and you have to like A&M's chances under those circumstances.
Just play the young guys. They can't do any worse.
Q: Originally posted by giveusroom Kansas held Rice to 23 points and 370 total yards. How can we possibly be this bad and why don't the coaches see the obvious on personnel issues?
A: I think they may be confusing playing veterans with production because they played veterans in 2012 and guys like Spencer Nealy and Damontre Moore had been part time starters prior to that.
Q: Originally posted by mem9498....For any front 7 set, how do you defend a team that pulls their OGs and C so much?
It seemed at times Alabama would pull two linemen, allow our tackles to run in only to already be behind the play going outside, and Bama now has a convoy getting to the 2nd level?
A: Last year, Kirby Ennis played the three technique and took on double teams and stoned them. He's playing nose right now and A&M seemingly has no one who can do that at the other tackle.
Q: Originally posted by TexAg06 .Tarp, are the 2014 defensive recruits going to be able to make an immediate impact, or are we still 2-3 seasons away from a good defense?
A: You need upperclassmen in the offensive line and front seven to be upper echelon. Sometimes you can play sophomores and get away with it.
Originally posted by AgCynic2 .Tarp - do we go JC for a DT in the 2014 class at this point? Do we move a backup OL to DT? While we have a lot of young talent on this defense, it's a real concern that we may not be very good on D for another couple of years. You just don't see upper echelon SEC teams playing freshman and sophomores on Defense.
A: You never know with jucos. Sometimes, it takes them a year to get acclimated although Tommie Sanders and Cameron Clear have contributed right away.
But if your upperclassmen aren't ready and you're having to play younger guys, you are going to have growing pains.
