My preface this year will be brief. After putting together my list this weekend, the theme became obvious. Outside of a couple notable outliers, the bulk of my listening this year has been heavily influenced by the Folk/Acoustic/SSW/Americana/Avett Mumford Brothers era we’re living in. Don’t really know what to term it, or explain it, but indie rock has gone this path, and I’m pushed all in. A couple weeks back, someone asked, “what kind of new wintery music is out?” Haha, Well, here you/we go…

1. Bon Iver, ST

I called me doing this months ago. When Vernon makes a misstep imo, I’ll let you know. He'll probably win a Grammy for this. So you still have a little time to seem cool about knowing the record before the world does. (<-- #ArcadeFire)

2. MuteMath, “Odd Soul”

I get shit for my drearydrab lists and perhaps for good reason. Well ead, haters. This is your Rock n Roll feel good selection. Uplifting, positive music and lyrics by perhaps the 4 most technically underrated musicians on Planet Earth. Clavinet (a piano that sounds like a distorted guitar), keytar, a classically trained bass player, and my favorite living drummer not named Grohl. Allies is the single of the record, In No Time is the most beautiful song of the year. Look, they’re touring all major Texas cities in January. As usual, I will personally refund any ticket expenses if this isn’t THE BEST live show you see next year. Whether you like all or none of this record, please go see them live.

3. The Head and the Heart, ST

I listened to this record more than any other in 2011 per iTunes. I made a special trip to ACL to see them after the Idaho game. I used to like River and Roads as my favorite track of the year until William Tolliver ruined it for me for life at a tailgate set up. Assuming you haven't heard him sing it, at least you can still love it.

4. Boy and Bear, “Moonfire”

Rabbit Song rules. Blood To Gold is bandolinanjo goodness.

5. James Blake, ST

I could make my case for James Blake. I could break down the intricacies of Limit to Your Love, but I’ll save you the time and my breath. You’ll hate this one. I did too for a long time. Then I watched him sing The Wilhelm Scream live and went renounced all my past JB transgressions. I am officially a convertee. You’ll still probably listen to one 15 sec clip on iTunes and ignore. That’s OK. But lmk if you wanna talk James Blake, I’m ready for that now.

6. Mayer Hawthorne, “How Do You Do?”

Ok, it’s a white dude, doing Motown. And doing it well. Hell, we let Ben Harper into singer/songwriter. Berry Gordon can relinquish a little table space to the hipster “Mayer”. Seriously, listen to “Finally Falling” or The Walk It’s the quirkiness of the Blue Album meeting Smokey Robinson. It’s those 3rds and 5ths, do wops, and horn player grooves that made Motown so sexy. But sung by a white guy, singing black music, in a white tone, singing about black women. Get on my level!

7. Fleet Foxes, "Helplessness Blues"

I have always seen FF as Band of Horses without any balls. And to an extent, I'm right. But who hasn't felt castrated by life, situation, or a piece of pussy? I wouldn't sugg and recco piling on plates at 24hr to this one, but rather a joint and a book.

8. AA Bondy, “Believers"

Traditional, minimalist, folk music, fingerstyle guitar, harmonica, too smooth to open the mouth too much to sing. You Bingham/ Hayes Carll fans need apply. Check out Killed Myself When I Was Young preferably or any of the many live versions on the youtubz. If that tune wets your whistle, purchase the whole record, for it shan’t disappoint. My buddy Dustin calls this music “honky tonk”, I just call it good.

9. Noel Gallagher, “High Flying Birds”

It’s Oasis, minus the frat rock and that sack of shit Liam. Known as the creative genius of Oasis, and perhaps more composed of the two, Noel in all likelihood deserves some good karma and a shot at the spotlight alone. Just like an Oasis record of old, there are as many missed notes and there are un-catchy songs. 0. Great popular music. If the radio ever gets wind of this record, you will too. AKA…What A Life!and If I Had a Gun

10. Destroyer, "Kaputt"

Dan Bejar has built a career on being the weird kid. Okay, not just the weird kid, but the weird kid at weird kid camp. He's a member of Canadian Supergroup The New Pornographers (some, myself included, would argue the most important as well) but shys so far away from the crowd at their live shows you'd (literally) think he was a creepy fan who snuck onstage to take pictures of AC Newman's feet. Everything about Kaputt is wrong, from the cheesy sax to the copy-paste Diet Fresca ad lyrics, to the elevator music beat. And that's also (surprisingly?) what's so right about it. "In a pinch / in the sky / in your eye [insert Casio keyboard drum fill] In the sky / in your eye / in a pinch" is a mantra for the mantra-less. Can't sleep? This song F*CKING KILLS insomnia. It’s Ambien that has stayed up all night drinking Nyquil which has itself been digging ditches with a shovel made of Benadryl. And if you’re like me, you will love it after your second listen.

The Singles:

White Lies- Bigger Than Us
Bright Eyes- Jejune Stars
Drive By Truckers- Everybody Needs Love
Fleet Foxes- Helplessness Blues
Midnight City- M83
H*A*M- Kanye and Hova
Whirring- The Joy Formidable
White Limo- Foo Fighters
Manchester Orchestra- April Fool
The Civil Wars- Barton Hollow
Rapter- Stuck in my id
Animal Collective- On a Plain (Nirvana cover. if you can find it)

New to me, but from 2010:

James Vincent McMorrow, “Early In The Morning”

The Irish send us another S/SW almost as tasty as their whiskey. Please listen to this cover of Steve Winwood’s Higher Love This one is for HA. In the vein of Bon Iver…but that’s such a copout…I hate that I said it. Maybe more Brett Dennen or Damien Rice?? Blah. If this import were actually a 2011 release, it’s top 5 without hesitation. Slight warning, do not watch this man sing, he is a hideous bastard.

Happy 2012. The Year of the TEXAS AGGIES!!

Animal Collective's version of On a Plain is trippy as shit.

So glad nobody has typed "Sufjan Stevens" yet.

that version of 'higher love' should be used to interrogate inmates at gitmo...

Play that version of higher love in your car you'll be gettin brain so fast you won't know what hit you. I sent it to a couple of my office boo's and I could practically smell the secretions.

You should be thanking me for that gift, dude. YWIA.

Let me also say that the Boy and Bear rec is a great one.

You are leaving out some really good tunes.

The following are my Top 3:

Artist/Song

1.) Evans Blue / Erase My Scars

2.) Five Finger Death Punch / Under And Over It

3.) Hollywood Undead / Been To Hell

This yearly AY tradition makes paying for this sight worth every penny. I wish I had something to contribute, but I am just not on that kind of level, so I won't insult y'all by trying...

Found some good tunes last year so hopefully y'all won't disappoint this yr...

Thank you, EarlBB...and the other cOntributers as well...

And I almost forgot. The hottest new skeez in indie musics. Lana Del Rey. If the world of good music is hot water, Lana Del Rey is whiskey and lemon juice. Just a single from an EP now, but a definite contender for the 2012 list if the record plays like this.

Do not watch in public. This song is ridiculously bonerjams.

Solid list. Only because they released it in December, I forgive you for not including The Black Keys El Camino on the list. Otherwise, double gigs.

Posted on 12/27 8:50 PM | IP: Logged

I've been looking forward to this for 6 months. Thanks BB

Posted on 12/27 8:50 PM | IP: Logged

No forgiveness necessary. The Black Keys is not on my list bc I didn't think it's as good as the other 10 records I posted. Or the 30 I seriously considered.

But for the same reason we allow ChemAg to post his heinously atrocious top 3, I would allow/encourage you/others to post your lists and why you like them.

Posted on 12/27 8:56 PM | IP: Logged

Bought Boy and Bear because of this post. Solid!

Gold on a Ceiling justifies my rec. But that is just me.

Also, maybe I am too mainstream, but while Radiohead's King of Limbs does not hold up to In Rainbows, I would still give it top 10. Maybe number 10, but still in.

The Rural Alberta Advantage

Solid list. I really like Yuck's debut album, Yuck and the Decemberists' new album, The King is Dead.

No Neil Diamond?

Posted on 12/27 9:44 PM | IP: Logged

I would have to put Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes in my top 10 as well.

Other notable albums:
Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost. There's just something about this album. Soft vocals and a strange familiarity. You'll listen to it and may be underwhelmed at first, but then you get a sense that you've heard the tracks before, like in another era. And as with all good albums you'll want to hear it some more. There's nice variety and musicality. Check out pitchfork's review. link

Youth Lagoon - Year of Hibernation. The overall sound gets a bit monotonous, With the "lo-fi, signing in a folgers can effect," but damn it's catchy. Try "Cannons" "Afternoon" and "17"

Singles:
Real Estate - Green Aisles
Neon Indian - Polish Girl
Alexander - Truth
Black Lips - New Direction

Ben Harper's album "give till its gone" is worth a listen too. Try "I will not be broken," and " spilling faith.". BB, I couldn't tell if you were dogging him or not.

The only thing that can knock me from my Joey V depression is BB's annooal music thread. So many great suggs and reccos here, but there are so many more worth mentioning.

First and foremost, my favorite album of last year is the Goat Rodeo Sessions with Chris Thile of Nickel Creek fame, YoYo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan. Each of those guys are about as good as they come on their respective string instruments, but they came together for the most intricately precise album that you'll hear anywhere, much less in the new Bluegrass Fusion movement that's going on right now. Here's a little taste. If you dig that kind of music, let me know and I can point you to some others that are making some serious tunes these days, as well as the innovators of the entire genre.

BB teased The King Is Dead by The Decemberists last year in his list, but it didn't officially hit until 2011 so I count it for this year. It's an incredible album, with backing vocals by none other than the aforementioned Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins, who I have a HUGE adult crush on. I'd break her strong back.

Oh, man. Gimme gimme gimme.

Back to the music, though, it's really different from what The Decemberists have done in the past, and apparently will be the last they do for a while. Dear Avery is a haunting song, especially if you are a dad. The Calamity Song, Don't Carry It All, Down By the Water, Rise To Me...the entire album is great from top to bottom. Sara Watkins on the background only makes it better. I love her. Did I mention that?

If you are OGT or a marginal P2 of MJK, then you've got to check out his side-side project, Puscifer, and their album Conditions of My Parole. It has the haunting pipes of MJK with a mix of new techno-Indie tunes. Tiny Monsters is such a great way to start the album off, and they follow it up with Green Valley which reminds me of some of the stuff he did on the APC eMotive album. Ironically, the weakest song on the album is the title track, Conditions of My Parole.

2011 was a GREAT year for music. So many more to come, didn't want to slam them all at one time.

Posted on 12/27 9:58 PM | IP: Logged

Really? The season isn't even over....or is it?

Most of my faces are all in the indie rock/folk/blues/americana genre as well. Not a clue on how to accurately define it.

Bon Iver
Bon Iver
Without a doubt, Hugh’s favorite album of the year. Right now, Justin Vernon can do no wrong. This isn’t For Emma, Forever Ago, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact this album helps break Bon Iver free from the over-told story of Emma being recorded in a cabin in the Wisconsin wilderness.
The thing that makes this album so great is the layering of so many different sounds. There’s guitar, saxophone, keyboards, trumpets, drums and so many other. Bon Iver is completely different in so many ways from its bare bones predecessor except for one thing, Vernon’s hypnotic high registered voice. And it seems so effortless. It’s an album I will never ever get tired of.
Side note: When listening to this masterpiece, listen to it in order (which I provided below). The flow that it possesses is undeniable.

I Can’t Make You Love Me

The Weeknd
House of Balloons , Thursday, Echoes of Silence
Holy. Shit. Where’d this guy come from? Abel Tesfaye is an Ethiopian Canadian singer that has taken the interwebs by the balls and made it his bitch. The Weeknd has dropped three mix tapes this year (House of Balloons, Thursday, Echoes of Silence) that are phenomenal. The songs on these albums have a very dark feeling to them but the lead singers voice is so freakin pure that it hooks you in and you can’t stop listening. All of three of these mix tapes are available for free download on their website. I highly recommend giving them a listen.

House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls
The Morning
The Knowing
Loft Music
Next
The Zone ft. Drake
Dirty Diana (MJ Cover)

Mutemath
Odd Soul
There’s so much to this album. Funk, Rock, Melodies. I love it. The constant through most of Odd Soul is the ferocious ear-rocking drums which provide the undeniable percussion on “Allies”, “Odd Soul” and “Quarantine.” The single Blood Pressure has been played on tons of college football games this season as they went to commercial and the video for it is badass. You wanna rock? Put this album on and enjoy.
Blood Pressure
Odd Soul
Allies
In No Time

Foster the People
Torches
Seems weird to think FTP’s debut album came out in 2011. It feels like they’ve been around for quite a while now. Pumped up Kicks has been in heavy rotation since last year but Torches wasn’t released until May of this year. I love this album. Kicks is a laid back indie jam but the rest of the album is an electronic/vocal charged onslaught. Helena Beat and Houdini are songs that without fail, make my head rock and feet tap. Just fun, kickass music.
Pumped up Kicks
Houdini
Helena Beat
Call It What You Want
Don’t Stop

Fleet Foxes
Helplessness Blues
Fleet Foxes are the tits. Plain and simple. They love music (and making music) and that makes listening to their albums so refreshing. So many good tracks on this album and they are firmly entrenched on my top 10 favorite artists. Like Bon Iver, there is never a bad time to listen to Fleet Foxes.
Helplessness Blues
Grown Ocean
Lorelai
Battery Kinzie
The Shrine/Argument

Grouplove
Never Trust A Happy Song
I plugged this group earlier in the year and I’m still loving this album. You’ve most likely heard their song “Tongue Tied” on the most recent iTouch commercial. They’re a mix between Cage the Elephant, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Naked and Famous. The lead singers voice is so damn contagious. Love their debut album.
Itchin’ On A Photograph
Colours
Tongue Tied
Lovely Cup

Foo Fighters
Wasting Light
Dave Grohl is driving the pop rock bus and its steam rolling down the road unimpeded. Hop on and enjoy the ride. This band will forever be one of my all-time faves. No doubt. They made “Everlong” and no matter what they do until the end of time they will be the shit in my book.
Rope
Walk
White Limo
Bridge Burning
These Days

The Joy Formidable
The Big Roar
Another debut album on the list. The album cover for Big Roar is very fitting for this album. Waves and waves of guitars and vocals smash down upon the listener throughout. “Whirring” and “Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie” are fantastic. The more and more I listen to this album, the more I love it.
Whirring
Heavy Abacus
Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie
I Don’t Want To See You Like This

Black Keys
El Camino
Ahhhhhhh, there it is. That Auerbach guitar. That Carney drum dominance. This is the Black Keys I fell in love with many years ago. Don’t get me wrong, Brothers was one of my favorite albums of 2010. But El Camino gets closer to that grungy hard rock that made Magic Potion, Rubber Factory and Attack & Release so great.
Gold on the Ceiling
Little Black Submarines (Best Song on the Album)
Sister
Money Maker
Dead and Gone
Lonely Boy

James Blake
James Blake & Enough Thunder EP
I really can’t fvcking stand Dubstep so I never really gave James Blake a fair shake when this album shot up in popularity but after finally giving it a listen I was blown away. Dude is definitely talented and it shows, especially on his cover of a classic Joni Mitchell song “Case of You”. He absolutely kills it. His song with Bon Iver is also greatness.
Case of You
Fall Creek Boys Choir ft. Bon Iver
Limit to Your Love
The Wilhelm Scream

HONORABLE MENTIONS: The Antlers (Burst Apart), Youth Lagoon (The Year of Hibernation), Drake (Take Care), Kanye/Jay Z (Watch the Throne), M83 (Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming)

12/27 10:38 PM | IP: Logged One of the greatest things that has come about the last couple of years is the single singer/guitar player sitting behind a mic. BB said it best...the new age of Indie has gone more into this folk-twisted music that is so sad and wistful. I have no idea what to call it. The vocals are superb, and the feeling the artists are able to convey is almost like the early 70's writers like Townes or Neil Young, but with better recording equipment and less psycho drugs.

This is a short album by Alexi Murdoch. Pay attention to Her Hands Were Leaves. Dylan would listen to this. That song reminds me so much of Nico's These Days from the Velvet Underground days.

OUTSTANDING submission from Hugh Honey. The Antlers follow up to Hospice was a bit hard for me to get into, but I really dig Putting the Dog to Sleep. Those guys are so weird and sad, in a dark demented way.

I respect Bon Iver, but I can't listen to that very often. The entire album has a similar sound and he just kind of hums through songs. Its great here and there but I like stuff with more of a pulse. probably more of a have to see live to fully "get" group.

I'll have to play spectator until later tonight, MDA let me down today. Showed up at 615 to give blood and they accidentally cancelled the order and the clinic isn't open until 8 to place the order.

A big thank you is in store BB05. Your list does not disappoint. HA and others thank you as well. I have a whole new list of artist and songs to go through and some on here have really caught my attention.

The indie scene has boomed into a folk type sound, but more importantly the music scene has went back to a less big company controlled sound. The artist are looking for smaller outlets to release music and experimentation of music is alive and well. It reminds me of the bands in the mid 60s who came up through small venues from San Fran. Many bands made an album or two and dissappeared into obscurity or formed other bands. It sharpened music and made it so much better in the long run. I applaud these bands and there sink or swim music out there and banging out their self written songs.

I like AA Bondy, Mayer Hawthorne and The Weekend. It going to take a little bit for me to catch up and listen to more of them but at first take, they are all pretty good.

Lana Del Ray---- This is a little bit of wow. I started getting the Mazzy Star and their singer Hope Sandoval vibe. You will have to be in a certain type mood to listen to Ray's music.

The Goat Rodeo sessions is a must. I have it downloaded and its a such a good album. Would love to see live.

Of Monsters & Men---- Like it alot. something about that type of music always sounds great to my ears. Mumford and Sons has really opened doors to this sound and I hope to hear many more bands making this sort of music.

Now to Destroyer "Kaputt"--- Oh BB05, I am going to have to listen to all of these guys music. This song has the 80s feel. While people everything 80's crap, they probably only listened to what was on the radio. This type of music has a special place for me. I am actually going to put this song right into my 80s category on itunes and just play it from there to see how perfectly it fits.

There are many more listed but I have a problem trying to listen to to much all at once. The bands I have choosen above will give me 6 months at least to catch up.

Thanks again.

Can someone please tell me how to get into Bon Iver's music? I want to fit in. But I cannot, cannot like it.

The falsetto is hard to get into.

Posted on 12/28 9:14 AM | IP: Logged

I've honestly been too damn busy with everything to be into new music as I've been in the past. It's nice to see folks getting into the singer-songwriter/"folk" (in the loosest sense) genre. For alt-country/No Depression guys, like myself, it's where I've been forever. Here are a handful of albums from 2011 that really stuck out to me:

Hayes Carll - KMAG YOYO - Hayes has always been underrated, imo, but there's not a better songwriter working right now. Great albums don't come around all that often, but this is one.

Buddy Miller - The Majestic Silver Strings - Not a big duets album fan, but hey, it's Buddy Miller.

Lucinda Williams - Blessed - Her best album since "Car Wheels On a Gravel Road." Awesome album.

I remembering listening to Skinny Love over and over and loving it. Every once in awhile I'd try to listen to the rest of the album and I just couldn't get into it at the time. Then one day, for some reason, I listened to Emma from beginning to end and was like whoa. I've been hooked ever since.

Maybe I'll try it on a weekend.

Skinny Love is the only song that doesn't make me want to drill my ears out with an auger.

Don't want to start checking these out until I have enough time and some privacy to give each album an earnest listenin' to, but i saw that guy who hates dubstep repping the weeknd and had to share my personal fave of theirs (or rather Abel Tesfaye's, since it's really just an acoustic solo, but whatevs...).

Check it out.

The Weeknd - Rolling Stone

AND FOR HA

PLEASE share whatever you're holding on the bluegrass/americana/folk front. Admittedly, I've neglected this scene almost entirely over the last 18-24 months while exploring the plexus of EDM, but I'm a fiend for that high, lonesome sound. Bring it.

(...and just because I immediately imagined your reflexive sneer, one of my guiltiest pleasures in the world is "The Fox". That song goes SO hard in my bubble.)

Mrs. HA said it best...when you hear the Bon Iver stuff, you have to picture an indie movie where some guy is out walking after finding out his girlfriend is dying from cancer and/or has decided to move out of their loft to go live with another chick. Pick a song, and that's playing as the background music as he's strolling around looking for a place to jump into the water.

I havne't seen Megafaun listed yet. These guys are the remnants of Deyarmond Edison, which was Justin Vernon's first big band (Vernon is the singer of Bon Iver. All of his groups sound like they should be someone's name, for some reason). If you want to go back to see where Indie first got going, go listen to the ST Deyarmond Edison album from 2004 or so I think, specifically My Whole Life Long.
