No forgiveness necessary. The Black Keys is not on my list bc I didn't think it's as good as the other 10 records I posted. Or the 30 I seriously considered.
But for the same reason we allow ChemAg to post his heinously atrocious top 3, I would allow/encourage you/others to post your lists and why you like them.

Also, maybe I am too mainstream, but while Radiohead's King of Limbs does not hold up to In Rainbows, I would still give it top 10. Maybe number 10, but still in.

The only thing that can knock me from my Joey V depression is BB's annooal music thread. So many great suggs and reccos here, but there are so many more worth mentioning.
First and foremost, my favorite album of last year is the Goat Rodeo Sessions with Chris Thile of Nickel Creek fame, YoYo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan. Each of those guys are about as good as they come on their respective string instruments, but they came together for the most intricately precise album that you'll hear anywhere, much less in the new Bluegrass Fusion movement that's going on right now. Here's a little taste. If you dig that kind of music, let me know and I can point you to some others that are making some serious tunes these days, as well as the innovators of the entire genre.
BB teased The King Is Dead by The Decemberists last year in his list, but it didn't officially hit until 2011 so I count it for this year. It's an incredible album, with backing vocals by none other than the aforementioned Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins, who I have a HUGE adult crush on. I'd break her strong back.
Oh, man. Gimme gimme gimme.
Back to the music, though, it's really different from what The Decemberists have done in the past, and apparently will be the last they do for a while. Dear Avery is a haunting song, especially if you are a dad. The Calamity Song, Don't Carry It All, Down By the Water, Rise To Me...the entire album is great from top to bottom. Sara Watkins on the background only makes it better. I love her. Did I mention that?
If you are OGT or a marginal P2 of MJK, then you've got to check out his side-side project, Puscifer, and their album Conditions of My Parole. It has the haunting pipes of MJK with a mix of new techno-Indie tunes. Tiny Monsters is such a great way to start the album off, and they follow it up with Green Valley which reminds me of some of the stuff he did on the APC eMotive album. Ironically, the weakest song on the album is the title track, Conditions of My Parole.
2011 was a GREAT year for music. So many more to come, didn't want to slam them all at one time.

Thought I was the only one listening to Goat Rodeo. Holy Shit I enjoy their stuff. i thought it was because I moved to Tennessee. thank god someone else from Texas digs it.

One of the greatest things that has come about the last couple of years is the single singer/guitar player sitting behind a mic. BB said it best...the new age of Indie has gone more into this folk-twisted music that is so sad and wistful. I have no idea what to call it. The vocals are superb, and the feeling the artists are able to convey is almost like the early 70's writers like Townes or Neil Young, but with better recording equipment and less psycho drugs.
OUTSTANDING submission from Hugh Honey. The Antlers follow up to Hospice was a bit hard for me to get into, but I really dig Putting the Dog to Sleep. Those guys are so weird and sad, in a dark demented way.
I need to listen to some of these. Keep 'em coming.

Really? The season isn't even over....or is it?
Most of my faces are all in the indie rock/folk/blues/americana genre as well. Not a clue on how to accurately define it.

I would have to put Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes in my top 10 as well.
Other notable albums: Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost. There's just something about this album. Soft vocals and a strange familiarity. You'll listen to it and may be underwhelmed at first, but then you get a sense that you've heard the tracks before, like in another era. And as with all good albums you'll want to hear it some more. There's nice variety and musicality. Check out pitchfork's review. link
Youth Lagoon - Year of Hibernation. The overall sound gets a bit monotonous, With the "lo-fi, signing in a folgers can effect," but damn it's catchy. Try "Cannons" "Afternoon" and "17"
