Sterling Brown is on Fire

Proviso East Pirates class of 2013 shooting guard Sterling Brown comes from a family where basketball reigns supreme.

The 6-foot-4 Maywood, Ill. native is the brother of Los Angeles Lakers guard and 2003 Illinois Mr. Basketball, Shannon Brown. With two years left in high school and his stock rising on the AAU circuit with the 16-U Mac Irvin Fire squad, now is the time for Sterling to make a name for himself on the recruiting scene.

Brown has concentrated on becoming a solid player on both ends of the floor for the good of his team.

"[I am] a great all-around player on both ends of the floor, love to pass the ball to the open teammate," Brown said. "[I] can score at anytime."

Brown teams with many strong Illinois prospects on the Fire, including DePaul class of 2014 recruiting target Jahlil Okafor. Brown has used the additional playing time to further improve on areas of his game that needed work after Proviso East ended their season in March with a 22-6 record.

"[I want to be] more aggressive, consistent and maintain that killer [instinct]," Brown said.

With the 2013 recruiting scene beginning to heat up, schools are in the process of identifying primary targets for their recruiting class. Brown has not received a scholarship offer as of yet and cannot identify a favorite school, but has heard the most from DePaul, Providence and Xavier.

According to Brown, DePaul has been "real active" in his recruitment. Brown talks to assistant coach and former Illinois Fire AAU coach Billy Garrett on a regular basis.

DePaul's interest is not surprising, considering the strong connection the staff has developed to the Fire program since head coach Oliver Purnell was hired in April 2010. The connection to the Fire program has already landed DePaul three commitments: class of 2011 prospects, wing Jamie Crockett and guard Macari Brooks, and class of 2013 wing Billy Garrett Jr.

Brown admits that he has not only received recruitment from the staff, but from Fire players as well. Garrett Jr. has not been shy in trying to sway Brown to join him at DePaul in 2013.

While watching DePaul during the 2010-2011 season, Brown saw a team that could be a potential fit for his skills to develop.

"[I like how] they push the ball and get it out on the break," Brown said. "They have an up-tempo I can handle."

Brown and his father plan to schedule visits to schools in the near future. As of now, though, no visits have been scheduled.
