TE, Grant Martinez chimes in on his recruiting

For tight end Grant Martinez out of Scottsdale (Ariz) Notre Dame Prep, he is beginning to see his recruiting pick up, as the 6-foot-5, 210 pound tight end recently added Army to his offer count.

"Army offered me last Friday and Oregon State a few weeks back," claims Martinez, who realizes that the Black Knights are highly interested in his talents. "I've been talking to Army over the past 4-5 weeks and at least once a week. Coach Guyader has been filling me on the program and then they finally decided that they wanted me to play for them."

GBK reported last week that Martinez's teammate and friend, Luke Taffur also is receiving strong interest from Army as well. "They offered me and Luke on the same day," says the 3-star tight end. "When Coach Guyader called me and left a message, but at that time I had already found out that Luke got offered by them and he was telling me about it. So I called Coach Guyader back and he presented me with the offer from Army."

So where was Martinez when that ever so important call came in? "I was at my house and in my dad's office," he adds. "We just had general conversation about what was going on in my life and I told him that I was talking to Luke earlier. I told him that I heard that Army had offered him and I told Coach Guyader, that was awesome, because he's one of my best friends and I'm really excited for him. Then he told me that they talked to Coach Ellerson (head coach), along with the coaching staff and they wanted to offer me as well. It was pretty exciting, especially being offered on the same day as Luke."

For Martinez, there was a sense of expectation and needless to say, the Army offer settled any levels of anxiety. "We (Taffuri & Martinez) had talked about this before, because Coach Guyader had talked to Luke and I in previous conversation how he wanted to offer us when he came out for spring ball," shares Martinez. "So when he offered Luke, I thought there would be a chance he would offer me over the phone also."

And how does all of this translate to interest level? "I'm still learning a lot more about West Point, so I hope to visit there, learn more about them and also talking to coach will help as well ... I am definitely interested in them," says a very excited Martinez, who carries a 3.5 GPA 3.5 and I'm about to take his ACT's.

It is not uncommon to see the swift tight end on the outside, making for tough match-ups for smaller corners. "We run a spread offense and sometimes I'm in split out, says Martinez who had 36 receptions for 411 yards and 6 touchdowns. Martinez's athletic ability for a player his size fits right into same mold as one of his all-time favorite players. "I like Tony Gonzales, because he was also a two-sport athlete in college, so I love the way he plays and uses his body," shares the 6-foot-5 Martinez, who also plays basketball, where he plays forward and center. "He's been a big role model of mine."

Martinez indicated that hopes to enter his final campaign a little bigger and stronger. "I'm working out hard now and I'm going to try and play at 220 or 230 pounds this year. I still have a lot of room to go."

According to Martinez, Stanford, UCLA, ASU, Oregon, Duke and Northwestern are a few of the colleges that are on his radar.
