What we learned: EliteHoopsShowcase
Rivals.com caught the action at the EliteHoopsShowcase national event in Marrietta, Ga., over the weekend. Here are a few of the observations from scouting the event.
1. Mostella has five-star offensive talent
There is something special about an effortless scorer, and 2013 prospect Detrick Mostella is as effortless a scorer as you will find. An explosive athlete with a natural scorer's instinct, Mostella can get the ball in the bucket pretty much any way possible. He has deep shooting range, creative dribble moves, unorthodox mid-range finishes and above-the-rim finishing ability with either hand in the paint.
The question on Mostella is whether or not he will just be a five-star offensive talent or whether or not he will become a five-star prospect. There were occasions where he decided to defend and was quite impressive. With his type of athleticism, he has the potential to be an outstanding defender if he commits to it. The same could be said for rebounding although I never saw any effort in that area.
It is rare to find a scorer like Mostella. If he builds his body up and sharpens his competitive edge in aspects of the game other than scoring, he could be one of the better guard prospects in the 2013 class.
2. Trio of standout 2014 wings
Outside of Mostella, three of the most impressive prospects at the EliteHoopsShowcase were 2014 wings Ahmed Hill, Justin Gray and Jalen Lindsey. Hill is a well-built 6-foot-4 wing who can both bully his way to the basket and elevate or knock down shots from deep range. Gray, who is a long 6-foot-4, dominated at times with his defending and rebounding which translated into impressive fastbreak runs to the other end. Lindsey made great use of his length and athleticism at 6-5, blocking shots, rebounding and dunking in traffic.
3. No shortage of athletes in the south
Overall, the athleticism on display at this primarily southern oriented event stood out the most. The four prospects mentioned so far are all impressive athletes. And that doesn't include forwards like Leron Black, Jakeenan Gant, Tevin Glass, Fattod Lewis and Elijah Staley. All of these prospects are high-major prospects with versatility and athletic prowess. They were the best of the athletic forwards, but they certainly weren't the only athletic forwards on the court.
