Silverdome will host underclassman combine

MORE HELMHOLDT: Heisman winners awe Diggs, DGB

The confetti is still being swept from state championship parades in the Midwest, but it is already time to get back to work for several top prospects from the 2013 and 2014 classes.

The Adidas Maximum Exposure Combine has kicked off the off-season camp and combine scene each of the last two years, and will take place this weekend in Michigan at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Getting an early jump on the off-season is important, combine director Curtis Blackwell says, so the gains made during the fall do not get lost or forgotten.

"A lot of kids have great years during the season and they are excited and motivated to let everybody know that they are the top guys," Blackwell said. "This gives us a chance to roll that momentum into the off-season as opposed to having to wait and sit idle for five or six months."

Last year's event was the first opportunity for us to see several prospects who are now major Division I recruits, and also the only place where several of the state of Michigan's top prospects worked out in the off-season.

Farmington Hills Harrison four-star wide receiver Aaron Burbridge made last year's Maximum Exposure Combine his only off-season camp or combine experience. The Michigan State commitment then had a standout senior season and is now ranked as the nation's No. 100 overall prospect.

The event also was the first chance to really see top 2013 prospects, such as Warren (Mich.) De La Salle quarterback Shane Morris, work out in a combine setting. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Morris displayed his great arm strength at the event, then carried that over to the spring where his performances in 7-on-7's and national and regional camps eventually earned him several Division I offers before the start of his junior season.

Morris will be back for this year's Maximum Exposure Combine, and he will be joined by many of the state's top 2013 prospects as well as prospects from Indiana, Ohio and Canada.

Other headliners from Michigan's 2013 class expected at this year's combine include Manchester quarterback Nate Bossory, Chelsea running back Berkley Edwards, Detroit Cass Tech's Jourdan Lewis, Grand Blanc linebacker Luke MacLean, Detroit Douglass' Demetrius Stinson, Detroit Country Day's Poet Thomas and Holland's Corey Willis.

Morris was just a sophomore when he broke out at last year's Maximum Exposure Combine, and several of the promising 2014 prospects in the state of Michigan also plan to showcase themselves this weekend in the wake of their sophomore campaigns.

Sturgis (Mich.) sophomore Chance Stewart has already created a lot of buzz with his play at the quarterback position. The 6-6, 205-pound signal caller threw for 1,361 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall. He will go head-to-head with Morris, Bossory and others on Saturday at the Silverdome.

Other underclassmen who have generated recruiting buzz early in their careers and will be in attendance are Farmington Hills Harrison sophomores Lorenzo Collins and Gary Hosey, as well as Detroit Cass Tech freshman quarterback Jayru Campbell.

The combine will feature speed testing, a 7-on-7 tryout, one-on-one competitions and position specific training. Registration begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and spots are still available. Registration in advance is $30 and can be done at www.adidascombine.eventbrite.com. They will also be registering at the combine at a cost of $40.
