Florida State scores legacy recruit

For a while, there was plenty of intrigue about just exactly where Xavier Rathan-Mayes might end up going to school.

As time came closer to his Saturday night decision, it looked as if the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Huntington (W.V.) Prep would follow in his father Tharon's footsteps and play at Florida State.

The No. 25 player in the class of 2013 did exactly that Saturday night at a gathering with friends and family at his home when he picked the Noles over Illinois and Connecticut

I think all 3 schools were total opposites in terms of style of play for Xavier," said Huntington Prep head coach Rob Fulford. "It made it a very difficult decision."

At the end of the day, though, the senior's familiarity with Florida State won out.

"I think in the end, the familiarity with FSU, Tharon playing there and the state of the ACC were the determining factors," said Fulford. "FSU got a big time scorer and competitor."

Like Fulford says, Rathan-Mayes is definitely a scorer. He has deep range on his jumper, is quite crafty off the dribble and is a physical scorer with mid-range game.

A four-star prospect who is on the cusp of five-star status, Rathan-Mayes is the Seminoles first commitment from the class of 2013.
