Swope Goes In Sixth To Cards

AggieYell.com's player by player breakdown of the members of the 2012 Texas A&M football team who could be selected in the 2013 NFL draft continues with WR Ryan Swope.

Size: 6 feet, 207 pounds

Resume: Texas A&M's most prolific receiver with 252 catches, 3,117 yards and 24 TDs during his four-year career; All-Big 12 selection in 2011, preseason All-SEC selection in 2012.

Supporters say: Swope is a completely fearless receiver who will do whatever he has to to help his team win. Highly effective receiver who can be effective in the short passing game while having move than enough speed to be a deep threat. Not afraid to challenge physical defenders and has the strength to beat them. Some of his biggest games in 2012 came against A&M's toughest opponents. Capable of adjusting to different styles of play, as he was highly productive in two different offensive systems while catching passes from three different quarterbacks (Jerrod Johnson, Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel). Improved his hands and route running each year.

Critics say: Can only be used as a slot receiver; route running still requires improvement. Really good north-south speed, but not much wiggle. Concerns about his health and durability, as he mentioned himself that he's endured four concussions at A&M. Had key drops or had trouble getting open against higher-caliber opponents in 2011.

Bottom line: Swope's A&M career can be summed up in his big catch over the middle against Alabama last fall: even though he knew he was going to get leveled by two defenders, he exposed himself to contact, stretched out and made a huge catch. And then he got up. Swope's aggressive, physical style of play means he'll take some big hits, but it doesn't deter him. He's become a good receiver with great speed (4.34 40), and he hasn't reached his full potential yet. He may get knocked for his height, but he's a unique size for a wideout. A rare home run threat at a normal position for a possession receiver.

Draft projection: 3rd or 4th round.
