Michael's talent tantilizes
AggieYell.com's player by player breakdown of the members of the 2012 Texas A&M football team who could be selected in the 2013 NFL draft continues with RB Christine Michael.
Size: 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 220 pounds
Resume: Rushed for 2,791 yards and 34 touchdowns in four seasons at A&M; averaged 5.28 yards per carry for his career
Supporters Say: Michael is as physically talented as any back in the draft, ripping off a 4.43 second 40-yard dash and bench pressing 225 pounds 27 times. A furious north-south runner who likes to inflict damage on his opponents. Has the size to grind out tough yards, but has the speed to be a home run threat. Performed as his best in a pro-style system. Has always produced when healthy.
Critics Say: His senior year was his worst in terms of production, gaining only 417 yards with a career-low 4.7 yards per carry and losing his job to Ben Malena. Was suspended for a game during the 2012 season, then criticized play-calling on Twitter. Overslept at the NFL Combine, missing two interviews with teams. Has suffered two severe, season-ending injuries in four college seasons. Pass-catching skills are largely unknown, and pass-blocking has been frequently criticized. Not always a decisive runner; can hesitate at the line of scrimmage instead of hitting a hole.
The bottom line: When he's healthy, Michael has always put up numbers. When it comes to sheer talent, no running back in this draft has more. Michael runs with power and can go the distance if he hits the hole. But there's issues that teams have raised about him off the field and have serious questions about how he lost his starting job to Cyrus Gray twice and Malena once. He's never reached his remarkably high ceiling, and it will be up to the NFL to bring that potential out in him.
Draft projection: 3rd or 4th round.
