NU QB signee Thorson breaks leg

Just two days after National Signing Day, Clayton Thorson suffered his first tough break as a Northwestern Wildcat. Literally.

The four-star quarterback from Wheaton (Ill.) North broke the fibula in his left leg in a church league basketball game on Friday night.

"I got a steal and went in for a dunk, and I came down funny," said the 6-foot-4, 197-pounder on Sunday.

Thorson said he initially didn't think he broke a bone because "it wasn't that painful" and he didn't hear a snap. He came out of the game and was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors diagnosed a fracture of the non-weight-bearing fibula bone below his knee.

Thorson is currently wearing a soft cast, and he will eventually be fitted for either a hard cast or a walking boot, which he will wear for five to six weeks. During that time, Thorson will not be able to run and will focus on his upper body in workouts.

The highest rated signee in Northwestern's Class of 2014 at No. 136 in the country, Thorson said he called head coach Pat Fitzgerald on Friday night with the news. Fitzgerald was well aware that Thorson played in the league, and the coach's message was "to heal up." He also offered Thorson NU's doctors should he need a second opinion.

Overall, Thorson is disappointed by the setback but is taking it in stride. If football players had to pick a leg bone to break, the fibula would probably get the most votes.

"It's not that bad," he said.

Besides, at least Thorson's team, College Church of Wheaton, won the game.
