Aggies face lot of questions at WR

Last year, Texas A&M went into the season with the knowledge they had a great weapon in Christian Kirk and hoped other players would step up. Damion Ratley definitely did. This season, the Aggies go into spring practice with faith in Jhamon Ausbon and...a lot to be determined.

Just a sophomore, Jhamon Ausbon is A&M's leading returning receiver.

Players on campus this spring

Sophomore Jhamon Ausbon (50 catches, 571 yards, 3 TD)

Sophomore Roshauud Paul (16 catches, 187 yards)

Sophomore Camron Buckley (13 catches, 256 yards, 3 TD)

Redshirt sophomore Kendrick Rogers (11 catches, 99 yards)

Redshirt sophomore Clyde Chriss (4 catches, 52 yards)

Sophomore Hezekiah Jones (2 catches, 13 yards)

Redshirt sophomore Quartney Davis (no stats)

Redshirt sophomore Moses Reynolds (no stats)

Considering the amount of talent in this group (five 4-stars), it's both frustrating and disappointing to see the lack of production. But with Kirk and Ratley gone, there are two open jobs and competition should be intense this spring. If Buckley gets moved outside, he could easily start opposite Ausbon; Paul will probably be the odds-on favorite to be the single slot receiver in the new offense. The rest of the two deep is completely up for grabs, and players who don't perform this spring may find themselves without a chance to compete this summer (or playing elsewhere).

Arriving this summer

Jalen Preston looks like he could play immediately.

Jalen Preston (6'2", 212; 47 catches, 1,096 yards and 13 TD at Manvel High School. 4-star WR, #90 in the nation in the Rivals 100)

Caleb Chapman (6'5", 210; 43 catches for 626 yards and 17 TD and Clear Brook High School. 4-star recruit according to Rivals.)

Montel Parker (6'2", 185; 2,400 all-purpose yards and 27 TD over the course of his career at Dickinson High School. 3-star recruit according to Rivals.)

If some of the veterans don't step up quickly, all three of these guys could see playing time in the fall. With his speed and strength, Preston looks like he's the real deal and could start from day one. Chapman is a matchup nightmare with his size and leaping ability; Parker is an outstanding athlete who stood out as a receiver, running back and quarterback at Dickinson.

Looking ahead to 2019

The Aggies are already after a number of top targets in a class that is absolutely loaded at wide receiver. With a lot of turnover possible, the Aggies could do some serious recruiting in this area.

Kam Brown, Colleyville Heritage (committed)

Chase Lane, Houston Pius X (committed)

Theo Wease, Allen (5-star, #3 player in the country according to Rivals)

Arjei Henderson, Fort Bend Travis (5-star, #6 player in the country according to Rivals)

Jalen Curry, Pius X (4-star, #64 player in the nation according to Rivals)

Elijah Higgins, Austin Bowie (4-star recruit)
