AggieYell.com's series on Texas A&M's 2023 spring practice concludes with a look at the special teams unit.
Returning players
Redshirt senior punter Nik Constantinou; 62 punts, 41.7 average, long of 57 in 2022; second-team All-SEC
Junior placekicker Randy Bond; 13-17 in field goal attempts, long of 51; 25-25 PATs
Redshirt freshman placekicker Ethan Moczulski; did not play in 2022
Redshirt senior punt returner Ainias Smith; 8 punt returns for 27 yards in 4 games
Redshirt junior punt returner Moose Muhammad; 14 returns for 94 yards in 10 games
Sophomore kick returner Le'Veon Moss; 2 returns for 32 yards
Departures
Kicker Caden Davis (transferred to Ole Miss)
Kick returner Devon Achane (declared for the 2023 NFL Draft)
What to watch for
Will there be a competition for the starting kicker job, or is it Bond's to lose? The walk-on didn't miss inside of 40 yards, but struggled outside of that. Moczulski was recruited due to his huge leg and is a scholarship player, so he didn't come to A&M to sit.
A&M also needs to figure out who's going to be the primary kickoff returner with Achane's departure. Moss, Muhammad and Evan Stewart all got a look late last season, and Reuben Owens, Raymond Cottrell and Micah Tease could all be possibilities as well.
Will anything be decided in the spring?
Sure, Constantinou is the starting punter and Ainias will return punts unless the coaches decide he's too valuable and pull him off the job. As for a potential competition between Bond and Moczulski, we'll have to see if Jimbo Fisher decides if there's a competition to be had.
