It's time for a fully loaded AY Mailbag...
Q: by the end of the class, what commit will be our highest ranked, and where? Top 10? 15? (Wrckncrw)
A: It’s hard to say who will be the highest ranked, because rankings change quite a bit up at the top. There’s not much difference between a guy who’s 10th and 25th. But they’re in on a lot of very talented guys, so I would suspect they will end up with a couple in the top 20.
Q: Don't know if you've hit it yet, but a thought hit me as I was reading the Big Recruiting weekend story, on the recruiting aspect of things, do other recruiters on our staff work the QBs or is that a Jimbo thing? (84aggiect)
A: Darrell Dickey does as well, but if you’re quarterback, you’re going to hear from Jimbo a lot.
Q: How does Adeleye compare with Leal at this same point in their careers ? Before he's taken a snap in college ? Does he have the potential to be as good ? (ACSA82)
A: For one thing, he’s bigger (weight-wise). He’s already 295. But I’m not sure how long comparisons are going to hold, because Adeleye was playing defensive tackle exclusively in the spring game, not defensive end. That could mean he becomes a very quick tackle, but a different kind of player than Leal.
Q: Recruiting seems a lot like cold calling to me, how does a coach know when his incessant calls go from helpful to annoying? Do kid's get more turned off by the constant ringing of the phone or the lack of contact? What percentage of our recruits get an in home with Jimbo? (H273)
A: Recruiting is not anything like cold calling. The players know who’s interested in them and when contact will be initiated (frequently, it has to go through the high school coach, who then has the player call the college coach). The coaches figure out which guys they’re seriously interested in, and that sentiment has to be reciprocated. As for how many recruits get in-homes — not many. Those guys to guys who are already committed or very high on the list of potential commits.
Q: With the coaches schloss is bringing in, how quickly can our baseball program become contenders? (Jeffmcd99)
A: I don’t think it’s going to take all that long. The guys he’s hired are extremely impressive, and they’ve already added two top-flight hitters. It seems like he made a very quick diagnosis of what’s wrong with the program and is addressing it. Or maybe he just read sites like this? Nah.
Q: How really pissed off is TCU about losing their BB coach to A&M? Any good stories?
A: No stories. They knew what was up when A&M came knocking. They can’t compete with that kind of money and hired a well-respected guy in Kirk Saarloos. Life goes on — but there’s no question they’re bitter about.
I really like Buzz, but I'm beginning to get concerned about how his style fits @ A&M. What's he needing to do to get people back in the seats and a real positive "buzz" regarding the basketball program again besides just win?
A: Hold up. You’re talking about a Texas guy who was on Billy Gillispie’s staff and places a premium on grit and defense. His style is a great fit. He needs more talent, and a full revamp of the roster seems to be a big step in that direction.
Do recruits talk about the over zealousness of CSPD? Could this ever affect a recruits decision to commit to a town like College Station? (Big Smoothie)
A: No.
Q: dig you find a player in Atlanta that you wish that we could offer and we haven't done it yet ??? (Mrdoctore86)
A: Honestly, no. But I really liked Penn State 2022 commit Kaden Saunders. The wideout was really, really good and made some great catches against tight coverage. But this is a pretty good indication that A&M has done a pretty good job evaluating talent.
Q: A&M appears to have 3 excellent head coaches and staffs in football, basketball, and baseball. What individual percentages would you put on Jimbo, Buzz and Schloss for winning a national championship in the next 5 years? (Davidimy)
A: Once again, a reminder I don’t do percentages if I can avoid them. I think they’re a fool’s errand and totally subjective. But you can evaluate the status of a program. Right now, Jimbo has by far the best shot at winning the whole thing. The Aggies are getting to be one of those teams who have the talent to be in the mix every year. Buzz and Schloss, on the other hand, are facing rebuilds.
Q: Does Schloss have an open check book for hiring assistants or will they just follow because of who he is and what they think he will do at A&M? (86Aggie)
A: An open check book? Outside of Vandy, nobody has that. But can he outspend nearly everyone else? Yep. And that’s what’s going on.
Q: Any thoughts if Erb or Thomas get upgraded in rankings?
A: We just had a ratings update. If anyone’s going to move again, it won’t be until fall.
Best guess - number of OL, WR and CB we will get in 2022 class;. You can say any names if you like,.
A: I do not wish to say names. But I think they can get four wideouts, four OL and three CB if they want. Maybe more.
Is there real interest on a second QB or is it as a potential fallback if Weigman decides to go MLB baseball? (Have Gun Will Travel)
A: I think they’re increasingly comfortable with the idea Weigman will make it to campus, but there’s still a question about whether a quarterback will transfer if they don’t win the starting job. But Tevin Carter has put off his commitment until fall, so that works well from A&M’s perspective.
Q: What’s your best guess on who goes with Jimbo to SEC media days? (Parlay magic)
A: That’s a rough one. Tradition says you take either seniors or superstars. But A&M has a bunch of guys who are underclassmen who may not be around for 2022 media days. So my best guess is Kenyon Green, Isaiah Spiller and DeMarvin Leal.
Q: 1. Do you think LJ will get any meaningful carries this year? Jimbo seems to love him. On a scale from 1-10, how optimistic are you about him over his A&M career?
A: I don’t think he’ll get meaningful carries unless there’s an injury. Having said that, my optimism level is a 9. I think he’ll be real good.
2. After the dust settles, what would you guess this recruiting class will rank? (Thepassag)
A: They’re already in the top 10 with fewer commits than the teams in front of them. I think that, if it goes the way it looks like it can, they’ll be back in the top 5 again.
Q: Is Rueben Owens recruitment going to be similar to Zach Evans? (Jakeh05)
A: I expect it will be weird and all over the place. But no recruitment has ever been like Zach Evans’. And I hope no one ever is again.
Q: We already have Williams and Erb on board at tackle. If Dewberry, Banks and Early all want on board, do you take them all? If not, what order would you accept? I know position flexibility is important so do any of them move to guard/center? Is Erb's future at guard? (Joefried)
A: I take them all. I think Erb’s future is at guard, but he’s preparing to play both guard and center.
Q: How do these assistants, like the guy we just got from Georgia ( I forget his name), have so much influence on recruits, like Bear in this case? These guys won't have much contact with the recruit once he's on campus, not being a position or S&C coach. And how do they go about telling a kid like Bear "Georgia is definitely the best place for your" one week and then switch and say "No, A&M is definitely the best place for you" and the kids believe it? Not that I don't want these guys on our side. Glad he's here and glad he's convincing to recruits. (Boo yah)
A: You’re talking about Nick Williams. And some people just have a knack for developing a rapport with recruits. Ish Aristide did it, and now Williams is doing it. It’s pretty remarkable to watch. It’s almost like the proverbial selling ice to Eskimos.
Q: Holstein being committed for 2023 will this effect Carter’s offer? (Stormnorm)
A: No.
Can I tag on to this question? Would like to know LSU's interest in Holstein. (Richard23)
A: I think the bigger question is, what’s his interest in them? They’ve offered. They pursued some. He committed to A&M nearly two years early. I think that LSU is under the impression they can get Arch Manning (I doubt it) and that’s where they’re expending their energy. Holstein certainly knows that he’s A&M’s #1 option and LSU’s second, at best. That would irritate me if I were a competitive quarterback and I’d be more interested in sticking it to them than joining them.
Q: What level do you see Luke Matthew's playing at this year and could he be a big factor in helping regaining last year's form? (Staubach1972)
A: We don’t know. He didn’t play last year and wasn’t all that impressive in 2019. But Jimbo has repeatedly praised him, which does draw your attention. They’re putting a lot of faith in him being the anchor of that line, so he has to be a big factor.
Q: who do you think will be our first 5 start recruit to commit this year? (Mrdoctore86)
A: Kelvin Banks may make a decision in the next couple of weeks, so…
Q: Is A Smith now the SEC’s most dangerous player with ball in his hands?
A: Either him or Treylon Burks at Arkansas.
Which position group are you most excited about? Which group ends up the biggest surprise?
A: I’m most excited about the running backs, but I think the safeties are going to be a lot better than they get credit for.
Which of our 3 stars end up as 4’s? (Elicrow)
A: Hang on a second — they only have three 3-stars. That’s not a whole lot to deal with. But I like Jarred Kerr quite a bit.
Q: With Holstein's commitment, it looks like we probably won't need another QB in 2022. Do you agree? I think the spot can be better used on a WR or a safety. (Kyling)
A: I don’t see how a 2023 QB committing has any bearing on the 2022 class. The quarterbacks who do are the ones on campus, and you’re still not sure if one will leave this summer.
Q: emperor palpatine vs sauron. who ya got? (Chandler bhang)
A: Oh, Palpatine all the way. Ol’ Sheev is a bad, bad boy.
Q: Which of our 4*s end up as 5s? (Win77)
A: I could see Weigman ending up as one.
Q: This has been an impressive recruiting run by Jimbo the last few years and it does not seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
Is this run the best you’ve seen for A&M recruiting over multiple classes?
A: Yes. Absolutely.
Other than the SEC and Coach Fisher what’s the #1 factor A&M can sell recruits on? And what’s working in recruiting.
A: Winning a national championship seems to be working pretty well. They also sell them on the 40-year plan that is being an Aggie. They can also point to their success putting players in the league.
How many draft picks does A&M have in the 2022 draft? Could be a fun 1st round. (Guns-n-bone)
A: I don’t think it’ll happen, but they could have as many as four (Green, Leal, Spiller and Jalen Wydermyer).
Q: NIL!!! With NIL becoming legal in many states July 1, is it becoming part of the pitch we are giving recruits?
A: Already has been.
Have recruits started mentioning it to any of y'all?
A: Absolutely.
Have y'all started asking recruits about it? (Aggdoc)
A: Absolutely.
Q: Did Cody have a big time at DisneyWorld and what’s her forecast for Anderson? (Carguy1901)
A: Yes, she had a very big time. On Anderson, she says she doesn’t know. She’s watching Ladybug and Cat Noir right now.
Q: Do coaches ever hold it against players who put them thru hell while being recruited once they arrive on campus? Or is it a fresh start, now let’s get to work? (Phastman)
A: If it were that bad, they would just drop them. So they take the short-term annoyance for potential long-term gain.
Q: Petty alert: can you recap for us all of tu’s recruiting decommitments or transfers that came our way recently? I’m happy to hear about the ones we stole from other schools too but don’t want to be greedy with your time. (Thompsonryans)
A: Hmm. The only big one I know of overall is Reuben Owens, and that’s a huge one. They need a guy like that to show they can compete with A&M on the state stage. So far, they haven’t. The Aggies haven’t flipped many Texas commits; they just get guys Texas fans had already put on their list. Guys like Leal, LJ Johnson, Demond Demas, Bryce Foster, Tunmise Adeleye, Shemar Turner, Jarred Kerr — these were all Longhorns in waiting. Until they weren’t.
By the way: I just looked at the Rivals rankings and A&M is 9th with 10 commits. Texas is 16th with 11.
Q: Is that enough questions? (86Aggie)
A: Yes.
