Why the Aggies wanted him: One thing Kevin Sumlin did that was effective during his later years at A&M was to bring in a kicker or punter, give them a year or two behind a veteran and then turn them loose. Doing that Shane Tripucka and Daniel LaCamera helped both of them become elite kickers. Now, Small is being brought in to spend a season behind LaCamera before taking over as A&M's placekicker.

Where he projects in 2018: In a Sumlin system, Small probably would be used to kick on occasion during blowouts in non-conference games. Jimbo Fisher tends to take a little more hesitant approach to such things, and it would probably be better anyway to let Small redshirt in 2018 and then have him as the unquestioned kicker for four seasons.
