Q: I've heard 20 different scenarios on the Holton Hill, Kris Boyd, Sheffield situation. Can you clarify for us a few things:
a) Where do we stand with each one
b) How do we rank them as players
c) Do we take all 3 or just 2 of 3. Are there any scenarios that change this such as order of commitment? (92RAB)
A:
1) Sheffield is quiet, but A&M is presumed widely to be his leader. The Aggies either lead or are near the top of the list for the other two.
2) Sheffield is the top of the heap. It appears Hill has moved into the second slot, with Boyd third.
3) Order of commitment could have a lot to do with how many corners they'd take. Sheffield is the prize and he'll probably commit last. If A&M could get Sheffield and Hill, I think they'd be happy to team them with Deshawn Capers-Smith and Roney Elam and call it a day. But if the Aggies decide they'd take Boyd and he comes knocking before the rest, then they'd probably find a way to take all three if possible.
Q: It appears our defense is substantially better but at LB we are really thin. Who if any of the LB commits or potential LB commits could come in next year and have a Myles Garrett type of effect. By that I mean not only contribute but be defensive stars as true freshmen. Seems to be a big piece of the puzzle we are missing that could really solidify this D and the team. Thanks. (Eyecutter98)
A: The guy you're looking for is Malik Jefferson, without a doubt. Much like Myles Garrett, he's very quiet, very smart, driven to succeed and freakishly athletic. If the Aggies were to add him to the 2015 class, they'd have a guy who could step in at either outside linebacker spot immediately and make the depth across the board better as a result.
Q: How worried should we be about the Arkansas running game in 2 weeks? Before Saturday I would have said we would match up well with them. I know we had some key players out last Saturday that should help shore up the run defense but would like to know your thoughts. (JMart79)
A: I think it'll be a tough test, but there are two things people are worrying about that may give a false impression: Arkansas' demolition of Texas Tech's front and A&M's bad showing against Rice. First, Tech had not given up LESS than 271 yards rushing to any of its last eight FBS opponents; second, A&M came out flat and less than motivated Saturday night, something both the coaches and players admitted to. In spite of Rice moving the ball up and down the field, the Aggies stuffed them when it mattered, or when they flipped the switch. A&M did a very good job stopping South Carolina's running attack, and that's the closest thing they've seen to Arkansas. If they show up like that, they'll have some success slowing down, but not stopping, the Razorbacks. If they come out like they did Saturday night, the Hogs will run all over them.
Q: Not who, but how many of our junior RBs do you think declare for NFL draft? (trapper)
A: Zero. There's no point in it. Running back is a devalued position in this day and age and at this point, only Todd Gurley looks like he's a first rounder. None of the backs have put up the numbers or shown the consistency needed to be drafted where you'd want to be if you come out early, so they'd just be hurting themselves.
Q: Is this the best 8 deep WR corps in College Football? Ever?
Is Mastro the single most important player on the whole team? Factoring in depth, talent, and position?
Any concern with Allen's INT's or was he simply taking chances in scrap time he normally wouldn't? (ag4SEC)
A: 1) It's off to a good start, but let's play more than three games before we start making those kind of statements.
2) He could well be. It's either him or Deshazor Everett.
3) Nah. He's a freshman, he's learning and he's taking those shots when up five touchdowns.
Q: With Speedy out 3-5 weeks, so you expect Pope to get Speedy's reps, and Quiv to get Pope's? (JCW AgMan)
A: First, let's discuss 3-5 weeks. That is wrong. Sumlin called that "completely false," and while he doesn't like to discuss injuries, he doesn't BS you when he does. Now, on to the big part of the question: yes, I do expect Pope will start. And no, I don't expect to see Quiv add any snaps at all. He's a slot receiver, and he's not going to move. I'd expect more chances for Jeremy Tabuyo and Jamal Jeffery, both of whom have made appearances at that position in the first three games.
Q: Should we be concerned about tu's near upset of UCLA? Or is UCLA that bad? (AgsRule97!)
A: UCLA is not nearly as good as they were made out to be, their line is awful and they were playing their backup quarterback. And they won anyway. Texas is without the only really capable quarterback they had, with David Ash retiring; they're banged up and just not good to begin with. I said they were going 4-8 before, and I'm sticking to that now. The only reason that matters at all from A&M's perspective is on the recruiting front, as it may help sway some uncommitted targets the Aggies' way as they clearly head in the right direction as Texas goes in reverse.
Q: 1) touching on Sumlin's comments on SMU from the press conference- how much can SMU realistically change up their offense in a week with Rossley?
2) we consistently see comments regarding players doing well and the coaches saying, "we need to play him more" and then they don't- mainly on D- what is with that? (AggieInDC)
A: 1) Probably not much. I think he's been spending this week trying to figure out who their good players are and ways to get them the ball, not scrapping and rebuilding their system. This is going to be done with bubble gum and bailing wire, not anything full-scale.
2) Coaches are creatures of habit and do not like deviating from game plans when they're in the middle of games. It can be annoying, but that's how they are. I know you're talking about Jay Arnold, so we'll use him as a discussion piece. The Aggies wanted to use size on the interior to slow down Rice's running game, and that meant Alonzo Williams and Ivan Robinson. When Arnold got out there, his speed helped him make plays, but Robinson was the best of the three Saturday night. That cost Arnold more snaps. What the coaches have to do, and appear to have done, is look at the film and find ways to better divvy up snaps for all three guys. Arnold and Robinson both deserve to play more.
Q: I know it's early but I've already started comparing Kenny Hill, Speedy and Armani Watts to Sam Bradford, Sammy Watkins and Earl Thomas. Could they be just as good? (fachaudhry)
A: Heck I don't know. Maybe. But I'm falling back on the "it's only three games, let's not get nuts" stance here.
Q: What is the real maximum intermediate Kyle Field capacity? Any chance we could sell SRO tickets for the decks in the corners and set a state record exceeding JerryWorld for the LSU game? (TAMU-83)
A: If I remember right, capacity this year is in excess of 106,000. I don't think they're going to sell SRO seats, and there's no longer room down on the field like there used to be. I think they max out there.
Q: Josh Walker: by season's end is he following in the footsteps of Mastro or headed in the direction of Chevis? Would be a real plus if he starts to 'catch on' and becomes a solid MIKE. (pebbycree)
A: I was a little disappointed, but not surprised, that Walker struggled Saturday night. He's been on campus for three months and is only in his second game (he didn't play against South Carolina). He's already ahead of Chevis in that he's playing, so if he can progress like Darian Claiborne did last year -- make plays, tackle and not make many mistakes while not necessarily knowing all of the ins and outs of being a MIKE -- then A&M will take that. He'll get the really heavy course of learning the mental game in the spring. The best thing he can do is learn from Mastrogiovanni and Justin Bass and follow their lead when it comes to making reads and calls.
Q: I don't envy Coach Spav and the distribution decisions he has to make, considering all the weapons we have. That said, how can we not get ball to Trey more? 2 carries last week? Wow! I think he has the highest YPC at 6.5 (other than Dolezal) and he's never even had a chance to get into a rhythm. Do you think all 3 backs are back next season?
With that in mind, do we have ANY realistic shot at one of the two 5 star RBs we've recently offered? (hogtide)
A: As I said earlier, yes, I expect all three back. And Trey still has more carries than anyone else, with 22 to Brandon Williams' 20. Unlike some other coaches, Jake Spavital is a who will go with his gut and play whoever he feels has the hot hand, and that meant mostly Tra Carson last Saturday night. If Trey has a strong week of practice and does well with his first couple of carries, he'll get a lot more than two against SMU.
On the 5-stars? We'll see. I think it's an uphill battle at this point, but if they like what they see when they visit and A&M keeps winning, anything can happen.
Q: Our chances for another 3 5* class with Harris, MJ, Kirk? (SubmarineAG87)
A: With those three? Not good. I think Damien Harris ends up elsewhere. The other two and Kyler Murray getting bumped up? That I'll buy.
Q: 1. What's your opinion of Daeshon Hall given he looked like he had become a force and Myles is now pulling double teams, and Daeshon was quiet during the last game? What should we expect in your opinion moving forward?
2. How does the coaching staff get the team motivated this week, given last week's flat performance, and given SMU's total meltdown as a team? (tsip despiser)
A: 1) I'm fine with Hall. He hasn't been Myles Garrett, but he's exceeded my expectations, especially against the run. Remember, he's still learning too and is going to get smarter and stronger as time goes on. I think he and Garrett can combine to be a very potent set of bookends on that line.
2) Pretty simple: They're playing for jobs this week. The rotation gets smaller starting with Arkansas, and if you come out flat, you'll come out and stay out. They know they didn't play well last week and have probably caught a lot of flack for it since. It may not seem like it on paper, but this is an important game for A&M going in to conference play.
Q: Is Donovan Wilson getting enough snaps to give us confidence at BS? Seems like HMatthews has been playing a bunch of snaps and may get worn down as the season progresses. Also haven't seen Deshazor's backup getting a lot of playing time. I'm thinking there's a remote (but not impossible) possibility that Harvey, Watts, and Wilson are all out there with Deshazor before the season's over. (pebbycree)
A: Very, very remote. Wilson has been out there, but not a lot, so you still don't know what he has. Matthews has avoided injury for the most part during his career and you hope he can keep that up. Everett's backup right now is Tavares Garner, and he's gotten a little playing time. But there's going to be a dropoff when Everett isn't out there.
Q: 1) Was the chink in our defense armor exposed by Rice, run defense? If so, what will Arkansas do to us? We looked terrible against the option.
2) Tell us if our depth can sustain any more injuries, particularly at LB; other positions?
3) Were we too used to Johnny escaping and making improvised plays when the O line protection broke down that Kenny doesn't seem to be able to do, save the one long run? How many times was Johnny sacked in the first 3 games vs. how many times Kenny has been sacked? (CHUCK 70)
A: 1) First, Arkansas doesn't run the ball anything like Rice does. They'll line up in the I formation with a fullback in front and go that way, much like they do in the Big 10. The closest comparison is South Carolina to date, and it depends on what intensity level A&M brings.
2) At linebacker, thankfully, the Aggies are getting healthier. They were getting to the point where they couldn't really take another injury. The biggest problems outside of linebacker would be if Myles Garrett or Deshazor Everett went down, because the dropoff in talent gets pretty steep from one guy to the next.
3) At this point last year, Manziel had been sacked more times than Hill has, 4 to 3, in spite of Johnny's legendary elusiveness. They're two very different kinds of quarterbacks, with Johnny more willing to take off and run, while Kenny continues to move in the pocket to try to get a pass down the field. If he wants to run, he can, but making comparisons to Johnny isn't fair to him. That's not how he plays.
Q: Looking at the rest of our schedule having the next 2 games away do you think if we can get through them unscathed by injuries we will be 5-0?
And if we are what do you think our chances of running the table winning it all? I know its a lot to hope for but something just feels right about what has happened so far this year. (ffmedic87)
A: 1) Yes, I do.
2) This still is not an easy schedule. You've got four top 10 teams yet to face, with two of them (Auburn and Alabama) on the road and one of them (LSU) that just flat has your number. If the A&M team that played South Carolina comes out every week and remains healthy, they have a shot. But I hope people won't be too upset by one or two losses, because that's still a heck of a year when A&M was supposed to rebuilding.
Q: Thoughts about really going after Carlos Strickland hard now that Lodge has decommitted? We know that Beatty has a good relationship with the Skyline staff and he's been over there checking in on players throughout. Would be nice to get another 6'4" guy with soft hands in the fold, especially with this being our only big WR in the class this year. (Jessexy)
A: I doubt it highly. A&M is already looking at some other options, but none of them are at Skyline.
Q: Please use a creative analogy to describe how out of hand the SMU game might get. (Jphillips97)
A: Little Big Horn.
Q: What are the top three remaining issues on offense and defense that the coaches will emphasize vs SMU as final preparation for starting the SEC grind? (Old Army 74)
A: For the offense -- keep working on the deep ball, keep the tempo up, establish the running game.
For the defense -- bring consistent effort every play, get into 3rd and longs and force turnovers.
Q: Chances of Sumlin going after Wallerstedt? (Ag in Circle C)
A: Zero.
