Here's this week's edition of the AggieYell Mailbag:

Q: We want to be the best and are recruiting in a way that gives us a chance of being the best. However, many SEC foes are recruiting just as well. To be the best, what are we doing that well to separate us from the rest? (Hurting_10toes)
A: The difference is going to have to be what it always is for great programs -- recruit high-caliber talent and then develop it. A&M can differentiate itself with its offensive style, as it's already known as high-powered. That will help it recruit quality linemen, wideouts, quarterbacks (and, hopefully, after this season, more good running backs). The trick is going to be getting excellent defensive players and developing them. They seem to have started doing that on the defensive line (Myles Garrett, Qualen Cunningham, Zaycoven Henderson, Isaiah Golden); but now they need to get better in recruiting linebackers and defensive backs. Then, once that trick is accomplished, coach them up.
Sounds easy, huh?
Q: How is Hardrick Walker coming along and will he help to shore up the DL this year?
Also, will Malcome Kennedy have a breakout season? (wavodano)
A: Walker's getting a lot of snaps this spring with Golden's absence, but Henderson is seriously pushing him. I could see the freshman taking his spot in the two deep if he continues to progress. As for a "breakout" season for Kennedy, I think that he'll be a regular target and possibly the security blanket for whoever wins the quarterback job. But I don't see huge yards and touchdowns from him because he's just not the big play guy that Speedy Noil, Ricky Seals-Jones and Laquvionte Gonzalez are.
Q: If someone was to ask Mark Snyder why guys like Howard Matthews, Jenkins, Obioha, and Baggs seemed to regress in 2013, as well as the defense overall, what do you think his answer would be (other than anger)? (givusroom)
A: He'd probably say that there were a lot of reasons for their problems. In the case of Baggs, Matthews and Jenkins, consistency was certainly an issue (Baggs was inconsistent to the point of losing his job). But you've also got to look at the problems up front -- a lack of a pass rush and inability to defend the run for long periods of time, leaving the safeties and linebackers at a disadvantage. It's all one big machine, and major pieces didn't work in 2013. That caused everything else to break down too. Obioha was still recovering from offseason surgery last year and was in a position (rush end) that he was not comfortable with at all. On paper, the defensive front should be better this year. We'll see if that translates to better play elsewhere.
Q: Mark, I think you mentioned that Golden might be faster than Henderson; I don't know if you are implying he is better overall or not, but I don't recall Golden making the impact that Henderson has since he has arrived. Zaycoven has made a huge impression on the players and Staff right out of the gate. I think that Henderson might actually have the potential to be better than Golden and is better than Walker right now. What are your thoughts? (Cal-aggie)
A: One reason you're hearing more about Henderson is because Golden wasn't around last spring and he's been thrust into a lot of snaps due to the lousy situation on the front line due to injuries and the absence of Golden. Once he got on campus in the summer, you could see Golden was an impact guy right out of the gate. Both he and Henderson were raw talents, and Henderson has the advantage of spring ball. Golden didn't get that, and really didn't hit his stride until late in the season. But I liked Golden a ton in high school and I'm going to stick to my belief he's going to be the best of that crop (if he returns). Henderson is simply massive, broader than Golden (which is saying something) and uses that wide base to his advantage. He's also really, really mean.
Both guys are monsters, and it remains to be seen if Golden can keep his head on straight. But I DO believe they'll be the two deep at nose tackle this fall.
Q: Is RSJ on the inside going to take plays away from Cameron Clear??
Will RSJ and Clear be on the field (not on the outside) at the same time?
Foster Brooks or Brooks Robinson? (tsip despiser)
A: 1) No. They'll have different roles.
2) Yes. They'll have different roles.
3) Brooks Robinson. Come on, I'm an Orioles fan. He's the best third baseman to ever put on spikes.
Q: If the coaches feel Henderson is a day one starter do they make of it an opportunity to set an example by giving Golden the boot? Or perhaps with Claiborne if they feel the same about someone at his position? Is it not hard to argue that it should be done if the opportunity eases itself? (Hurting_10toes)
A: Golden's not going anywhere. The coaches fully support what he's doing right now and want him back. Claiborne is the guy I think is on thinner ice, because he's had multiple run-ins with the law. Kameron Miles only got one shot and he got the gate -- but that's a different case because you cannot betray your teammates. If someone breaks out at linebacker, sure, it would make it easier, but that hasn't happened yet. At some point, you may just have to bite the bullet and can someone who matters.
Q: Based on what you have seen and heard from Spring Practice, how are the DBs really doing? I hear some good things (aside from the depth issues) but I don't know if I should get my hopes up. Do you think Coach Joseph will significantly improve his unit by the Fall?
Also, I heard that at a recent scrimmage the defense did pretty well against our first team offense. Considering the fact that a big chunk of the DL is not practicing this Spring, does this represent good news for our defense or bad news for our offense? (Mattowander)
A: For the first part, I sure hope so. There's a distinct difference in how they train and how they play; they're more aggressive and they're being taught how to get up and jam guys at the line, then turn and run with them. Marcel Yates seemed terrified of the idea of getting up on receivers, and had guys playing way off last year. That's just flat out something I never want to see again. I'd rather jam guys at the line and gamble; if you lose, oh well. But death from a thousand easy paper cuts and blown tackles gets old real fast.
As for the second part: It's spring practice. The only thing I'd be looking at are individual performances at key positions and not much else.
Q: Who in the secondary is making any noise so far through spring practices? We see the pictures, hear about individual drill performances, but nothing about anyone cementing their place at any position. (chuckg_07)
A: Yeah, there are a few guys who are stepping up. Devante Harris is the guy who first comes to mind; he's a good bit bigger and playing aggressively. Deshazor Everett is healthy again and he's playing well on the other side. You may have heard this one before, but Howard Matthews is having a very good spring. But if you've heard it before, so has Mark Snyder and they're pushing him hard to keep practicing at a high level so he'll show some consistency when it matters.
Q: Are we really going to know much about the team at the end of spring practice other than conjecture? (Reecol)
A: Two years ago, Jameill Showers was the slam-dunk leader for the quarterback job. Christine Michael was in great shape and ready to dominate in a run-heavy offense. Damontre Moore looked lazy and out of position at defensive end. Of course, Showers lost the job to some guy named Manziel, Michael got beat out by Ben Malena, the Aggies threw it all over the place and ran with Johnny Football and Moore was an All-American. So, long story short, it's better to look for formation groups and tendencies than to think you've got the whole team figured out by the end of spring ball. A lot's going to change between now and Aug. 28.
Q: I haven't seen anything in a while ... what is the latest on Mike Mitchell? (3s2ghill)
A: Ohio State has not granted him his release and he is there through the spring semester. From there, it's anyone's guess.
Q: Has Noel Ellis gotten any time at all at regular corner?
What is Cheek doing better than the two jucos to garner 1st team reps at the moment and do you think he keeps his job?
How do you see the DT position playing out in terms of depth chart and projected snaps if everyone comes back healthy?
How short is Snyder's leash? (_TheDON_)
1) No.
2) He's got more experience in the system and he's outperforming them right now. He'll have the edge coming into the summer, but we'll see from there.
3) NT: Golden, Henderson, Walker
DT (assuming Ivan Robinson returns): Robinson, Alonzo Williams, Justin Manning
If Robinson does not return: Williams, Manning, DeShawn Washington
4) Depends on this season.
Q: It's become standard practice for the QB to commit prior to their senior year so that the University can build its class around their potential future leader. That being said, do we have any idea as to what is up with Kyler and when he will determine his choice? Obviously, once this decision is made he becomes a leader to help solidify the class of the team he chooses. (Slmnsam)
A: A lot of folks think Kyle Allen committed early, but he really didn't. He committed on June 3, 2013, which made him the seventh commit in A&M's class (Jarrett Johnson also committed that day). Kyler Murray has played things pretty close to the vest, but a lot of guys like to make the decision between the end of spring practice and the start of their senior season -- like Allen did. I think the May/June timeframe would be the time to start looking for him to make a move. And I think A&M is the heavy favorite to land him.
Q: We just had a rash of in state DB offers , one of which from Oak Cliff who then committed to Notre fn Dame of all places. Which do you think will pull the trigger to the Ags before April ends? (GEB85)
A: Difficult to say. Always in motion is the future (yes, you just got Yoda'ed). One guy I think it could be is Christian Kirk, the wideout from Scottsdale, Ariz., but that's just a hunch. I have no firm evidence to back that up.
Q: Now that combine and pro days are finished, how would you grade everyone? Did anyone really help or hurt their draft status in your opinion? (pharm11)
A: I'll approach this backwards. I think Manziel started off the process as a top 5 pick, slipped a little bit in the minds of some folks, then rebounded strongly back into the top 5 after his excellent Pro Day. Mike Evans was good in both Indianapolis and College Station, and probably moved from the late teens/early twenties to the upper teens. Jake Matthews was thought to be really good before, and he's still considered to be really good now. He's a top-10 talent, it's just a matter of how the draft shakes out on where he goes. Outside of that, I think we might wait a real long time for another Aggie to be drafted. In fact, it's a distinct possibility A&M has three guys picked in the top 15 and nobody else for the rest of the draft.
